Mini-Studies in Pink

I began working on the first mini-quilt in this series after hearing about the unexpected and sudden passing of a longtime friend. She was a fierce disability rights advocate, a talented writer, and a wonderful artist. Within our friend circle, she was known for wearing bright colours, often in abstract and illustrative prints. I wanted to convey a feeling of fearlessness - which is something she represented to me, even though it wasn’t something she perhaps always felt internally herself. Machine pieced, with A. on my mind. Hand-quilted details were added while attending her memorial service on Zoom. Measures 12” x 20”

The second of this series features the same pink cotton canvas, with a sheer fabric overlaid. It features scraps from a previous quilt. Sometimes chaos is only thinly veiled or is well contained/managed but not hidden - and that’s okay. Machine pieced, machine-quilted (matchstick style).

The final of this pink mini-quilt series is one of a stylized moth. At my friend’s memorial, a piece of her writing was read aloud as part of a eulogy. In the piece, she had likened herself to that of a cicada. With that in mind, I chose to make a cicada-inspired mini-quilt on the same pink cotton canvas.

These are my quilt objects for the month of June in 2023.
